Instead of looking on discussion as a stumbling block in the way of action, we think it an indispensable preliminary to any wise action at all. -Pericles.
New solutions are needed. Our current systems and solutions are inadequate for these times of rapid change and complexity.
New solutions grow when we activate collective intelligence in a group, organization, community to find new solutions to the increasing challenges of the world today.
Conversation matters. Language is the way we make meaning. When we listen to all community members and stakeholders, and invite ‘strangers’ to share with us what matters to them, new clarity and possibilities emerge.
We must challenge ourselves to work with multiple ways of knowing: intellectual, kinesthetic, and emotional. We must embody the change we seek.
In our teams and communities, we must invite everyone to participate, utilizing a diversity of perspectives, and experiences and minimizing/transforming conflict.
We must take ownership and responsibility.
We are all working and living with complexity. Meaningful and strategic conversations must be designed to hold multiple paradoxes: chaos and order, content and process, leading and following, ‘warrior’ and ‘midwife’, small group and large group, confusion and clarity, fast and slow, sacred and irreverent.
Meaningful conversations lead to wise action. Wise action means time for reflection, going slow enough to share our stories, taking stock of what we know, and pooling our collective insights for sustained change.
